Surprise!

We’ve actually been on vacation the last few weeks!  Well, the kids and I were on vacation, Rob, was working.  This trip isn’t something we had planned, but when the chance to work in Curacao for a few weeks came up, we jumped at it.

In case you aren’t familiar with it, Curacao is part of the Netherlands Antilles (or Dutch Antilles).  It’s also part of a three island sub-group known as the ABC islands: Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.  These islands all used to be colonies of the Netherlands, but now Curacao is a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.  So they speak Dutch.  Except the island is located off the coast of Venezuela, so a lot of people speak Spanish.   Either way, almost everyone also speaks English.

Enough about the history of Curacao, let’s talk about the climate! The average temperature in Curacao is 88 degrees.  Perfect for escaping the last vestiges of winter in Kentucky! And they are located in the Atlantic time zone, so one hour ahead of us at home.   This means when Anne and Ryan get up at 6am, it’s 7am in Curacao.

Anne playing "sunny vacation." It's pretty universal that we hate winter.

Besides the warm climate, this trip was appealing because of it’s length.  Rob and I decided that the three of us would join him for 2 of the weeks he was scheduled  to be down there.  We were excited to have a chance to really explore an area with the kids, not just a few days at a resort or a one day cruise stop.

The unique challenge to this trip was the travel.  This was the first time that I flew by myself with the kids.  Also, Delta doesn’t fly to Curacao, so we actually had to buy tickets and fly on another airline! Our itinerary was Cincinnati to Atlanta, Atlanta to Miami and spend the night.  Then the next day get on an American Airlines flight from Miami to Curacao.  It would be an adventure, for sure.

I look forward to telling you all about our time in the Caribbean!
